As we turn the page on the craziness of 2020, I’m writing to you with an update about the IABC/Oregon-Columbia Chapter. I’m Theresa Staples, and I’m your new chapter president. I first became an IABC member in college and have been a member off and on ever since. Over the years I have served on several IABC chapter boards, including the Orange County, CA, Silicon Valley and San Francisco chapters.
I became more involved with the Oregon-Columbia chapter earlier this year to help then-president KJ McAllister with some chapter business. I had planned to support KJ and the chapter moving forward. Tragically and unexpectedly, KJ passed away during the summer of 2020, and I felt compelled to step into her role and do the best I can do to revitalize IABC in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
KJ served on the board of the Oregon-Columbia Chapter for many years and was the inspiration behind many of the chapter’s biggest programs and events. I will always remember her as one of the first phone calls I made when I moved to Portland three years ago. She was so welcoming and supportive as a fellow IABC member and immediately suggested her favorite downtown coffee spot for a meeting.
I’m joined by two longtime IABC members: Scenna Shipley and Chris Wain. It is our sincere hope to bring some renewed programming and partnership to you this year. The three of us began meeting in September 2020 to gather our assets and put a plan in place for the new year.
Next steps for our chapter
Our first order of business for 2021 is to reach out to you, our members. We’re looking forward to speaking with each of you personally. We hope to learn from each of you what you value in your membership and what you would like to see from IABC/Oregon-Columbia this year.
From your feedback we will build our program for the year. As president, I hope to meet each of you in some way this year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out! I look forward to a better 2021.
